Meet our people: JonathanTrainee pensions consultant - Outsourcing BSc psychology, University of Nottingham
"The range of clients I deal with is vast, encompassing small enterprises to FTSE 100 companies."
I was fortunate enough to gain some work experience in pensions while I was studying and I really enjoyed it. I applied to Mercer because it has such a great reputation in the industry and my first round of interview with HR was so friendly and reassuring that I knew this was the company I wanted to join.
My role is really varied. I act as the main point of contact for the trustees of pension plans by providing a steamlined scheme management service which brings together administration, actuarial and investment expertise from across Mercer. I keep my clients up-to-date with changes in pension regulations and respond to any queries they may have. Like any job there are some routine tasks, but these are definitely outweighed by the unique and challenging projects that will help me become a rounded consultant. I’ve recently been involved in the implementation of a new pension scheme where my responsibilities ranged from data monitoring, consolidating the complex scheme rules and communicating changes to the scheme members.
What I like most about working for Mercer is the knowledge that I’m a part of a world-renowned company, and that I’m helping to provide an invaluable service to our clients. The range of clients I deal with is unbelievable, encompassing small enterprises to FTSE 100 companies.
Mercer is very supportive of my development. I’m currently completing the Advanced Diploma in Retirement Provision through the Pensions Management Institute, which is really relevant to my work. All of the course materials are paid for by Mercer, and I am given one study day per fortnight. There’s also a huge amount of advice and encouragement from my buddy, my performance adviser, my manager and the rest of the team. Working at Mercer, you really feel valued.
